Why the Peace Corps?

The question that I get asked all the time is "Why did you decide to go to the Peace Corps?"

This is the best answer that I can give people...I just wanted to. It all dates back to when I was a kid and I saw the movie "Forrest Gump." There is a part in that movie when Forrest comes back from Veitnam and he is in D.C. and he runs in to Jenny. Well there is a quick scene in that part that mentions the Peace Corps, and it has had my attention ever since. So in February of 2010 I called my mom on the phone and told her that I was going to join the Peace Corps. Honestly I don't think that she really believed me, I think she thought it was just a crazy idea because I was panicking about my upcoming graduation.

Well, I went ahead and applied. I meet with my recruiter Chanti and had my interview May 2010. I recieved my nomination to Sub-Sahara Africa that day was began filling out my paperwork to leave in February 2011. Well, my medical stuff didnt clear fast enough so I wasn't able to leave in February. The waiting game began and in March 2011 I finally got my formal invitation to do girls empowerment and education in Burkina Faso, and June 9th is the official date :)

People often roll their eyes when I say that I am going to Africa with the Peace Corps, that's ok. A lot of people just really don't understand what it is do something like that. :)
